President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the new Minister of Power, following recent developments in the sector.
The nomination was disclosed by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga in a statement on Thursday, noting that it has been forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation in line with constitutional provisions.
“The nomination has been transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation in accordance with the Constitution,” the statement read.
Tegbe’s nomination follows the resignation of Adelabu, who stepped down to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 election.
Like his predecessor, Tegbe is also from Oyo State and brings over 35 years of experience across both public and private sectors.
A former Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, he has led major initiatives in fiscal policy reform, institutional transformation, and governance. He has also advised key government institutions and private organisations on strategic reforms and investment frameworks.
Until his nomination, Tegbe served as Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), where he played a key role in strengthening bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and China.
His experience also spans the power sector, with involvement in regulatory and institutional reforms linked to agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).
“His nomination is expected to further strengthen ongoing efforts to reform the power sector, enhance grid stability, and attract sustainable investment in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Onanuga stated.
Tegbe’s nomination comes at a time when Nigeria’s power sector is under intense scrutiny due to recurring grid collapses and growing calls for improved electricity supply nationwide.
