Kano Police Launch Special Tactical Unit to Combat Armed Robbery, Kidnapping
The Nigeria Police Force in Kano State has established a specialised tactical outfit, the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), to strengthen the fight against armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
The unit, formally inaugurated on April 24, 2026, by the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, is designed as an intelligence-driven response team aimed at improving crime prevention, investigation, and prosecution across the state.
Police authorities said the creation of the VCRU aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police and is anchored on the provisions of the Nigeria Police Act 2020. The initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance professional and accountable policing while addressing rising concerns over violent crimes.
According to the Command, the VCRU will be responsible for responding to and suppressing incidents of armed robbery, kidnapping, and related offences through intelligence-led operations, while ensuring strict adherence to constitutional provisions and international human rights standards.
The police emphasised that officers deployed to the unit have undergone rigorous screening, alongside specialised training in human rights and professional conduct to ensure compliance with global best practices.
To reinforce public trust, the Command disclosed that the unit will operate under a civilian oversight framework involving representatives of civil society groups, traditional institutions, the legal community, and other stakeholders. A dedicated media liaison structure, alongside a public complaints hotline and desk, is also being established to enhance transparency and accountability, with a commitment to respond to complaints within 24 hours.
Speaking on the development, Bakori described the initiative as a decisive step towards strengthening security in the state.
“The security of lives and property in Kano State is non-negotiable. The VCRU represents our renewed commitment to intelligence-led, professional policing that respects the rights of all citizens,” he said, calling on residents to support the initiative.
The Command urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information to assist the unit’s operations, assuring that regular updates on its activities will be made available.
