The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP has assumed national leadership of the party following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria that nullified key party structures.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, April 30, 2026, and signed by BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara, the party’s highest advisory body said its decision was aimed at preventing a leadership vacuum and stabilising the PDP.
Supreme Court Nullifies PDP Convention
The BoT disclosed that the apex court invalidated the PDP’s National Convention held between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, which produced the National Working Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki.
The court also upheld the suspension of Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, and Kamaldeen Ajibade from the party.
According to the BoT, the judgment renders all decisions taken by the affected officials invalid, including the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman and the formation of a caretaker committee.
BoT Steps In to Fill Leadership Gap
Following the court’s decision, the BoT said both the Turaki-led and Mohammed-led leadership structures stand dissolved, placing the responsibility of party leadership on the trustees in line with the PDP constitution.
“The BoT hereby immediately assumes responsibility of the national working leadership of the PDP,” the statement read.
The trustees said the intervention is a constitutional step to restore order, promote reconciliation, and reposition the party ahead of future political activities.
Emergency NEC Meeting to Be Convened
The BoT announced plans to convene an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to appoint an interim National Working Committee.
The interim leadership is expected to oversee party affairs, ensure compliance with the Electoral Act 2026, and prepare the PDP for participation in the 2027 general elections.
Party staff have also been directed to resume duties at the national secretariat under the supervision of the BoT pending the appointment of a new leadership structure.
Call for Unity Among Party Members
The trustees commended key stakeholders, including governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, as well as other party organs, for their resilience during the crisis.
The BoT urged members to set aside personal interests and unite for the survival of the party and the strengthening of democracy in Nigeria.
“The PDP has suffered enough,” the statement noted, calling for reconciliation and collective efforts to rebuild the party.
The development marks a significant turning point for the PDP as it navigates internal challenges ahead of the 2027 elections.
