Members of the apex political body in Lagos state, Governance Advisory Council (GAC) Tuesday adopted Lagos dtate deputy governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, as their preferred candidate for the governorship position in the state in the 2027 general elections. The body also agreed to tax themselves to raise money for his nomination form.
Addressing journalists after their meeting held at the State House, Marina, Lagos, and attended by the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the deputy governor, Hamzat and 28 members of the GAC, the leader of the body, Prince Tajudeen Olusi said they have just concluded a special meeting over the forthcoming primaries for the governorship position.
He said the group decided to examine who to support for the position of governor for 2027 general elections.
He noted that even though the constitution of the party made provision for primaries, it also created room for the adoption of a consensus candidate.
Prince Olusi said agreeing to have a consensus candidate promotes unity in the party.
“We all agreed that Hamzat is the consensus candidate of our party and we have all pledged to stand by him.
“Ladies and gentlemen, gathered here are my fellow members of the GAC. It was our meeting, a special meeting where we deliberated on the forthcoming primaries of our party in preparation for the 2027 general elections of our country, and particularly we examined the position of the governorship for the 2027 poll.
“The constitution of our party provides for primaries, and our party has guaranteed free primaries for all members, for all aspirants, for all interested individuals.
“However, that very constitution also allows us to look at the issue of consensus. Consensus is a platform, is a means that can bring us together, that can bring peace and unity. Following this option, we have adopted, we have all agreed that Dr. Olufemi Hamzat, the current deputy governor of our state, is the consensus candidate of our party, and we have all pledged to stand by him,” Olusi said.
