Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, inclusive governance, and socio-economic development as the state marked the 2026 International Workers’ Day.
Speaking at the celebration held at the Haliru Abdu Stadium, Birnin Kebbi, the governor said the government would continue to prioritise workers’ welfare, describing salary payments, pensions, and gratuities as obligations rather than burdens.
Idris said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Insecurity, Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” reflects current challenges and requires collective effort to address.
He disclosed that over N10 billion has been paid as gratuities to retirees, alongside regular salary payments and the clearance of inherited arrears.
The governor also highlighted developments in education, health, housing, and workforce management, including the recruitment of teachers and health workers, renovation of medical facilities, and provision of subsidised housing for workers.
He said his administration has eliminated casualisation in the state civil service and introduced a N75,000 minimum wage.
On security, Idris said the government is supporting security agencies with logistics and resources to address insecurity across the state.
He added that women have been included in key leadership positions as part of efforts to promote inclusivity.
The governor said the administration will continue engagement with organised labour to improve productivity and workers’ welfare.
In his remarks, the state NLC Chairman, Murtala Usman, said insecurity and poverty remain major threats to decent work, urging stronger collaboration among stakeholders.
He called for sustained efforts to address the challenges affecting workers’ welfare.
The event featured a march past by workers’ unions and agencies, as well as presentations marking the celebration.
