The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to address the rising cost of living and the impact of inflation on citizens’ well-being.
Joe Ajaero, the NLC President in an interview on Tuesday said increasing the salaries of workers is no longer meaningful in a country with unstable currency and economy.
According to Ajaero, a salary of N1 million makes no difference to an average worker, especially considering the hike in food and fuel prices.
Ajaero said, “Even if Nigerian workers earn ₦1 million, it will not be meaningful if the naira has no value.
“What we are looking for is a currency that can sustain workers and their families at least to the end of the month,” Ajaero said.
The NLC president further stated that the rising cost of living has made life unbearable for workers who have families to feed and care for.
Also speaking on the incessant rise in the price of fuel, Ajaero expressed concerns that incidents happening in other countries are used as excuses to put Nigerians through financial pains.
“It is not ideal that events in other parts of the world automatically translate into hardship in Nigeria,” he warned.
