Delta Killing: IG Orders Dismissal, Prosecution of Police Officers
The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, following the conclusion of internal disciplinary proceedings.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, led to the death of Mene Ogidi and sparked public concern over the conduct of security personnel.
Acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, all officers linked to the shooting were withdrawn from the Delta State Command and redeployed to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary review.
Findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee established that the principal officer, Nuhu Usman, acted in clear violation of established rules governing the use of firearms, including provisions of Force Order 237.
According to the police authorities, the officer’s conduct was deemed unlawful and unprofessional, constituting a serious breach of his duty to protect life and uphold the law.
Based on these findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of the officer and others found culpable. The recommendations have since been approved by the Inspector-General and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
Upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers are expected to be handed over to relevant judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the incident.
Reiterating the Force’s position, the police leadership maintained that there is zero tolerance for extrajudicial actions and abuse of power, stressing that no officer has the authority to take life outside the provisions of the law.
The Inspector-General also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them of the Force’s commitment to ensuring justice and accountability.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, while reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
