Nigeria’s democratic stability is at risk, according to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of inciting internal conflicts within opposition groups, especially the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, harshly denounced the administration in a statement posted on his X handle, saying, “This has to be the most shameless government in Nigeria’s history.”
In his account of recent PRP events, Abdullahi mentioned that “about three weeks ago, the leadership of the PRP, led by its National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, paid a courtesy visit to the National Chairman of the ADC.” He clarified that rumors of a potential coalition agreement involving the PRP surfaced soon after the meeting.
“A few days later, rumors began to circulate that the coalition leadership was considering the PRP as an option,” he said. This is untrue, but it just needed that one hint of conjecture for a faction to appear in what had previously been a peaceful political party virtually overnight, opposing Baba-Ahmed’s leadership.
The issue, according to the ADC spokesperson, is indicative of a larger pattern under the APC government. “The government may continue to deny any involvement in the crises within other parties, insisting that these are merely internal failures, but the pattern is visible,” he added. “This is the reality of Nigeria’s shrinking democratic space under the All Progressives Congress.”
